These beautiful birds are native to the Solomon Islands, a nation of more than 990 islands in the South Pacific Ocean, east of Papua New Guinea.
It is unusual in the parrot family to have such extreme different characteristics between the two sexes.... the males are bright green, with bright candy corn colored beaks. The females are red headed and blue-breasted, with black beaks.
The first Scientists to see Eclectus parrots thought they were of two distinct species. Placing the males and females in separate cages they thought it curious that they did not breed. Finally someone saw the two birds in the same area and put it together that they were mates.
The Eclectus is second only to the African Gray in talking ability.
